Ink on Paper (2025 - ongoing)
This recent series represents a new exploration into paper, using it in somewhat unorthodox ways. The series explores the relationship between various materials and how they can be allowed to interact with only minimal intervention on my part. The process involves applying ink on the paper in a deliberate, almost meditative gesture. Often a single gesture is applied with a single stroke. From there, I apply water to the paper and carefully let the water and ink interact without further manipulation other than taking care not to let the process get too far out of control. The result is a blossoming that, while continuing to reflect the original gesture, morphs it into something that becomes part of the paper rather than something applied to the surface, a new gesture defined by the specifics of that stroke and the dynamics of that sheet of paper. The water allows the ink and paper to interact in unpredictable and barely controllable ways. This dance at the edge of control and chaos is a defining feature of my work.
The main gestures I work with in this series are the Zen ensō circle and a simple line. Each piece is unique and impossible to replicate.
