Sound Sculptures
A Secret Chord 12" x 5" x 5" (plaster, wood, speaker and electronics - 2017)
This piece is one of an ongoing series that explores the acoustics of enclosed and hidden spaces. The simple exterior of this piece conceals an invisible labyrinth with hidden chambers. The sound emanating from inside resembles a choir in a large cathedral.
In hushed tones 25" x 8" x 8" (mixed media, wax, electronics, LED lights - 2016)
This work comes from an ongoing series in which I explore muted light and complex sounds that result from the interaction of simpler ones. The works generally have a somber, meditative quality that invites quietude and reflection.

come closer 7" x 7" x 4" each (porcelain, LED lights, small speakers, electronics - 2014)
The idea for these pieces came from an encounter I once had while hiking. The sun was casting shadows through a yellow leaf that had fallen on the ground. The leaf and shadows were all very small and intimate but the luminescence and translucency of the leaf made it absolutely stunning! I kneeled down to take a photo and managed to snap two before the sun hid behind a cloud taking the shadows and yellow radiance of the leaf with it. I was very lucky to catch that brief display.
The pieces in this series are made of translucent porcelain that allows some light through it. They are illuminated from within with LED lights. They also emit a single sound (a sine or pure tone), each of a different frequency. The lights and sounds in each box are both controlled by a microprocessor that gradually ramps them up and down in a coordinated fashion but at random intervals. The behaviour in each box is independent of the other boxes. The whole display is quite hypnotic.

Summer Nights 18" x 7" x 5" (mason jars, small FM radios - 2014)
This piece is one of an ongoing series that explores the acoustics of enclosed spaces. Here, small radios are placed inside mason jars. The radios are all tuned to different talk radio stations and the antenna of each is extended enough so that it makes contact with the inside of the lid. Each lid is tightened by a different amount, causing it to have a different tension and resonant frequency. The jar acts as a filter and the lid as a resonator. The amount of tension on the lid gives each jar a different resonant frequency that is activated by the rhythm of the speech coming out of the radio.

I'll tell you a secret 5" x 5" x 5" (plaster, wood, small speaker - 2014)
This piece is one of an ongoing series that playfully explores the acoustics of enclosed spaces. A small speaker emitting very loud static noise is hidden inside a small plaster box with a hinged door. With the door closed, the sound is muffled and distant. Opening the door reveals the small, but very loud sound source.
