Within Without (2020)
A temporary, large-scale and site-specific installation using fabric, light, sound, and mixed media. 10ft x 12ft x 8ft.
Included in 'States of Being', an exhibition at the DC Arts Center in Washington DC.
‘Within Without’ is a site-specific installation that articulates and responds to the architecture and unique properties of the gallery at District of Columbia Arts Center. The installation highlights the stairwell area, a peculiar feature in the space. Blurring boundaries and bringing awareness to ordinary, often ignored things around us, prevalent themes in my work, are at the heart of this installation. Using sheer fabric, light, and sound, the installation creates an enclosed, discrete space that is simultaneously separate from its surroundings but visually accessible, and whose exact boundaries can shift as the hanging fabric moves with air currents. Sound and light both emanate from and connect the two spaces. Light is used to create a soft outline of the boundaries of the space along the floor. The sonic element is generated live using custom software designed by the artist in part to be difficult to locate. It will be perceived omnidirectionally as occupying the entire gallery and creating a single soundscape that bridges the two spaces.
